How Loyola University New Orleans scales AI literacy with CodeSignal
Challenge
Dr. Andrea Martin, a former data scientist and machine learning engineer turned professor of AI at Loyola University New Orleans, teaches courses including AI in Business and Business Analytics to more than 200 students each semester. She is passionate about teaching students how to use AI intentionally and as a meaningful professional skill.
Before CodeSignal, Dr. Martin relied on tools like ChatGPT and Gemini to introduce generative AI concepts. But these tools fell short. There were no structured resources that merged generative AI skills with business skills, and no way to assess student learning at scale. With a growing student body, Dr. Martin needed a solution that could deliver consistent, measurable AI education across all of her classes.
Solution
Dr. Martin was already familiar with CodeSignal from her industry career, where she valued it as a platform for building skills that matter to employers. When she began exploring how to integrate AI into her curriculum, she discovered CodeSignal’s AI literacy program—a structured learning path where students could practice hands-on and be assessed on their progress.
The platform’s flexibility became its greatest strength. Martin is able to pull from a mix of content, ranging from generative AI fundamentals, to machine learning concepts, to leadership skills, to build a class that is personalized to her teaching goals. Every week, students complete an assignment in CodeSignal, starting with the basics of AI and progressing through increasingly complex topics, as well as business topics. They also have access to Cosmo, CodeSignal’s AI-powered tutor, which lets them ask questions and explore topics in greater depth.
Results
With CodeSignal embedded in her curriculum, Dr. Martin has seen strong engagement across her classes. Students have completed 3,392 practices on the platform, and usage in her classes has reached 97%—a sign that the content is resonating and students are consistently participating in their weekly assignments.
Beyond the numbers, CodeSignal is helping students in ways Dr. Martin didn’t initially anticipate. Because students find the platform engaging and fun to use, some are going beyond what’s assigned to explore coding topics and AI concepts on their own, driven by curiosity rather than course requirements.
