Two Statistics + A Prediction on the Future of Tech Recruiting

What would you do if instead of a resume, you had a direct, objective measurement of a candidate’s skill set?

At the 2021 #HRTX Virtual: Hardcore Sourcing event, CodeSignal’s CEO and Co-founder Tigran Sloyan spoke about why this future is coming sooner than we might think—and what recruiters should do to prepare.

Statistic: 38.1% of developers don’t have a college degree in computer science or a related field.

One example is Evan You, the creator of Vue.js. Evan doesn’t have a computer science degree—he studied art and history and is completely self-taught. Would he make it past a resume screen for an engineering role?

Statistic: More than 94% of CS degrees granted every year are not from top tier programs.

In fact, the University of Central Missouri grants more CS degrees than Stanford and Harvard combined. CodeSignal took a hard look at our data and the skills sets of graduates from different schools, and our 2021 university ranking report was shockingly different from the traditional U.S. News & World Report list.

Prediction: Recruiting won’t become automated—instead, it will become more human than ever.

When you have verified, objective skills measurements instead of resumes, you don’t have to spend all your time trying to figure out who’s qualified. Recruiting becomes about forming real, long-term relationships. How can you connect with candidates on a personal level and understand what motivates them?

To bring more learnings from psychology into your work, Tigran recommends these books:
