Home Row Fundamentals
Introduction: Setting Up for Success
Welcome back! In the previous lesson, you learned how to measure your typing speed and accuracy. This gave you a starting point to track your progress as you work through this course. Now, we are going to focus on something just as important: how you place your hands on the keyboard. Proper hand placement, also called the home row, is the foundation for typing quickly and accurately. By learning the correct home row, you will be able to type without looking at your hands and reduce mistakes.
What Is the Home Row?
The home row refers to the way you place your fingers on the home row of the keyboard. The home row is the middle row of letters, where your fingers should rest when you are not typing. The most important keys on the home row are F and J. These keys have small bumps on them so you can find them by touch, without looking down.
- The
Fkey is where your left index finger should rest. - The
Jkey is where your right index finger should rest.
Placing Your Fingers: Step-by-Step
Let’s go through the steps to place your fingers in the home row:
- Sit up straight and place your hands over the keyboard.
- Rest your left index finger on the
Fkey and your right index finger on theJkey. Feel for the small bumps to make sure you are in the right place. - Place your other fingers on the home row keys as follows:

- Your thumbs should rest lightly on the
spacebar. - Keep your wrists straight and your hands relaxed. Do not press down hard on the keys.
Example:
If you want to type the letter F, use your left index finger. If you want to type the letter J, use your right index finger. All other fingers should stay on their home row keys.
This setup helps you always know where your fingers are, so you can type without looking at the keyboard. It also makes it easier to reach other keys quickly.
Practicing F and J: Your First Typing Movements
To get comfortable with the home row, let’s start by practicing the F and J keys. These are your anchor points and will help you build muscle memory.
Example Practice:
- Press the
Fkey with your left index finger. - Press the
Jkey with your right index finger. - Repeat this several times, making sure your other fingers stay in place.
By practicing just F and J, you are training your fingers to find the home row automatically. This is the first step to typing without looking at your hands.
Summary and What’s Next
In this lesson, you learned about the home row and why it is important for typing efficiently. You practiced placing your fingers on the home row, with special attention to the F and J keys. This is the foundation for all touch typing. In the next set of exercises, you will get hands-on practice with these concepts to help you build speed and accuracy. Keep your hands relaxed and focus on finding the home row by touch. You are now ready to start practicing!
