Testing Your Typing Speed

Welcome to the first lesson of the Efficient Typing course. In today’s digital world, typing is a skill that almost everyone uses, whether you are a student, a professional, or just someone who spends time online. With the rise of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, typing has become even more important. When you interact with these tools, you need to type prompts quickly and clearly to get the best results. Being able to type quickly and accurately helps you work more efficiently and communicate better.

Note: we will work only with the standard QWERTY keyboard.

Let’s look at some real-life examples of how typing speed can make a difference:

• Workplace Communication: If you can type quickly, you can respond to emails, write reports, and chat with colleagues much faster. This saves you time and helps you keep up with a busy workload.
• Learning and Studying: When taking notes during a lecture or researching online, fast typing lets you capture more information without missing important details.
• Using LLMs and AI Tools: When you use tools like ChatGPT, you often need to type detailed prompts or questions. The faster and more accurately you type, the more you can get done in less time.
• Everyday Tasks: Even simple things like searching for information, filling out forms, or chatting with friends become easier and quicker when you type well.

In all these cases, being able to type quickly and accurately helps you get more done and reduces frustration.

Before you start improving your typing, it’s important to know where you stand right now. In the next practice, you will be asked to type a short sample text. After you finish, you will see some metrics:

• Words Per Minute (WPM): This shows how many words you can type in one minute. It is a common way to measure typing speed. For most people, an average typing speed is around 40 WPM. If you type at 60 WPM or higher, that is considered fast and above average.
• Accuracy: This tells you how many words or characters you typed correctly compared to the total. High accuracy means you make fewer mistakes. A good accuracy rate is above 90%

Knowing your current speed and accuracy will help you track your progress as you go through this course.
