Use Visual Metaphors to Deepen Your Learning

Welcome to Renaissance Learning and Unlocking Your Potential. In this course, you will discover how to use visual metaphors to deepen understanding and leverage the unique strengths of both brain hemispheres. You’ll also learn to apply a proven test checklist to maximize your study results and master the strategy of tackling your most challenging tasks first. By the end of this course, you’ll have a toolkit of creative and practical techniques to transform your approach to learning and achieve greater success in any field.

We start by examining how visual metaphors are a secret weapon for making complex ideas stick. In this unit, you’ll discover how to harness the power of imagery and analogy to transform abstract concepts into something you can see, feel, and remember. By the end, you’ll be able to create your own vivid mental pictures that make learning faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

Barbara Oakley will tell us why visual metaphors work and other approaches that are effective such as stepping into a concept and using stories and models.

Here’s a short dialogue that demonstrates how visual metaphors can make learning easier:

• Natalie: I keep forgetting how osmosis works. It just seems so abstract.
• Jake: Try picturing water molecules as party guests sneaking through a fence to get to the side with more snacks.
• Natalie: Oh, that’s actually really helpful! Now I can see it happening in my mind.
• Jake: Exactly. The sillier or more vivid the image, the easier it is to remember.

In this exchange, Jake uses a playful metaphor to help Natalie visualize and remember the process of osmosis. Notice how the metaphor transforms a dry scientific concept into a memorable mental image.

You’re now ready to put these creative techniques into practice. In the upcoming role-play session, you’ll get hands-on experience using visual metaphors to explain and remember new ideas.
