Mastering the Number Row

Introduction

Welcome to your first lesson in the Numbers, Symbols & Functional Typing course. I am excited to help you master the keyboard. Since this is our very first lesson, we will start with the foundation: the number row.

Introduction to the Number Row

In the world of programming and data design, numbers are everywhere. Whether you are setting the size of a database column, defining a constant value, or writing a mathematical formula, you need to type numbers quickly and accurately.

Many people "hunt and peck" for numbers by looking down at the keyboard. Our goal is to keep your eyes on the screen. To do this, we always start from the Home Row.

As a reminder, the Home Row is where your fingers naturally rest: A S D F for your left hand and J K L ; for your right hand. Every time you reach for a number, your finger will start from here, tap the number, and immediately return to its home.

Left Hand Assignments: Numbers 1 to 5

The top row of your keyboard contains the numbers 1 through 0. We divide these between your two hands. For the left hand, each finger is responsible for a specific set of keys. You will notice that the numbers are not directly above the letters; they are usually shifted slightly to the left.

  • Pinky Finger: Reaches up from A to hit 1.
  • Ring Finger: Reaches up from S to hit 2.
  • Middle Finger: Reaches up from D to hit 3.
  • Index Finger: This finger is a "workhorse." It reaches up from F to hit both 4 and 5.

Think of this code example:

let count = 5;

To type the 4 in 403, your left index finger moves up from the F key. To type the 5 in the second line, that same index finger reaches slightly further to the right. To type the 3, your left middle finger moves up from the D key.

Right Hand Assignments: Numbers 6 to 0

The right hand covers the rest of the number row. Similar to the left hand, the keys are shifted, but this time they move slightly to the right.

  • Index Finger: Just like the left index, the right index finger handles two keys. It reaches up from J to hit 6 and 7.
  • Middle Finger: Reaches up from K to hit 8.
  • Ring Finger: Reaches up from L to hit 9.
  • Pinky Finger: Reaches up from ; to hit 0.

Consider this example where we define a port number for a local server:

const PORT = 8080;

To type 8080, your right middle finger reaches up for the 8, and your right pinky reaches up for the 0. You repeat this motion to finish the number. Notice how your hand stays mostly still while only your fingers extend.

Reaching and Anchoring for Accuracy

The secret to fast typing is not moving your whole hand. If you lift your entire hand off the keyboard to reach a number, you will lose your place. Instead, we use a technique called Anchoring.

When you reach for a number with one finger, try to keep your other fingers lightly touching their Home Row keys. For example, if your left index finger reaches up to hit 5, keep your pinky near the A key. This "anchor" acts as a guide, making it easy for your index finger to find its way back to F without you having to look down.

Always remember the Return Rule: as soon as you press the number, pull your finger back to the Home Row. This keeps you ready for the next letter or symbol. Maintaining a straight wrist and a relaxed hand posture will prevent strain as you make these upward reaches.
