Mastering Basic Symbols
Introduction
Welcome to the next step in your typing journey! Now that you are comfortable with the number row, we are going to add a layer of complexity: symbols. These characters are the building blocks of code and data formatting.
Symbols In The Real World
The Opposite-Hand Shift Rule
To type symbols, you must hold down the Shift key while pressing the corresponding number key. As a reminder from your earlier typing lessons, we use the Opposite-Hand Shift Rule to stay fast and balanced.
- Rule: If the symbol you need is typed with your left hand, you must hold the
right Shiftkey with your right pinky. - Rule: If the symbol you need is typed with your right hand, you must hold the
left Shiftkey with your left pinky.
This technique prevents your hands from stretching awkwardly and keeps your "anchor" fingers close to the home row (A S D F and J K L ;).
Left-Hand Symbols (! @ # $ %)
The symbols on the left side of the keyboard are located above the numbers 1 through 5. You will use the same fingers you used for the numbers, but you will hold the right Shift key while reaching.
| Finger | Symbol | Key Location |
|---|---|---|
| Left Pinky | ! | Above the 1 |
| Left Ring | @ | Above the 2 |
| Left Middle | # | Above the 3 |
| Left Index | $ | Above the 4 |
| Left Index | % | Above the 5 |
When reaching for these, try to keep your other fingers resting lightly on the home row. This helps you find your way back to the center without looking down.
Right-Hand Symbols (^ & *)
The symbols on the right side of the keyboard that we are focusing on today are located above the numbers 6, 7, and 8. For these, you will hold the left Shift key with your left pinky.
| Finger | Symbol | Key Location |
|---|---|---|
| Right Index | ^ | Above the 6 |
| Right Index | & | Above the 7 |
| Right Middle | * | Above the 8 |
Notice that the index finger is responsible for two symbols on each hand (like $ and % on the left, or ^ and & on the right). This requires a bit of horizontal movement, so focus on making precise reaches.
Summary And Practice Prep
You have now mapped out the first eight symbols of the top row: !, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *.
To recap:
- Use your left hand for
!,@,#,$, and%while holding theright Shift. - Use your right hand for
^,&, and*while holding theleft Shift. - Keep your unused fingers anchored on the home row to maintain your position.
In the upcoming practice sessions, you will work on drills that combine these symbols. Don't worry about speed yet; focus on using the correct finger for each symbol. Speed will come naturally once your muscles remember the reaches!
