Dynamic Programming Basics in TypeScript

Welcome to our next exciting lesson, where we introduce the basics of Dynamic Programming — a powerful method for solving optimization, combinatorics, and other complex problems. Dynamic Programming provides an approach to solve problems by breaking them down into subproblems and storing the results of certain calculations that are likely to be used again. This method helps avoid repetitive calculations, thus enhancing the efficiency of algorithms.

One of the famous introductory problems solved using the Dynamic Programming method is the Fibonacci Series computation. Traditionally, if you have to compute the N-th Fibonacci number using recursion, you would solve smaller, overlapping subproblems multiple times, leading to exponential time complexity. However, by employing Dynamic Programming, you can store the result of each solved subproblem in a memoization table. The next time you require the result, you check the table first, thus avoiding re-computation and dramatically reducing the time complexity.

Here is what the solution may look like in TypeScript:

function fibonacci(n: number, memo: Record<number, number> = {}): number {
    if (n in memo) {
        return memo[n];
    }
    if (n <= 1) {
        return n;
    }
    memo[n] = fibonacci(n - 1, memo) + fibonacci(n - 2, memo);
    return memo[n];
}

// Test
console.log(fibonacci(10));  // Output: 55

In the above TypeScript implementation, type annotations are provided for function parameters and return types. These annotations ensure that the inputs and outputs are of the expected type, reducing errors during development and maintenance. The n parameter is annotated as a number, emphasizing that it should always be an integer, representing the index of the desired Fibonacci number. The memo parameter is typed as Record<number, number>, indicating an object with numeric keys and numeric values, which clarifies its role as a lookup table for previously computed Fibonacci numbers. This improves code clarity and provides the assurance of static type checking for safer and more reliable code.
