Ready for the coaching leadership style? Last time we learned directing works great for team members with low competence and low commitment.
But what happens when someone on your team gains some skills but still feels uncertain or unmotivated? That's where coaching comes in!
Engagement Message
Can you think of a team member who had the skills but lacked confidence?
Coaching style is perfect for moderate competence with variable (often low) commitment. They know some basics but need guidance plus emotional support.
Think of it as "developing while encouraging" - you're still providing direction but now you're also building them up.
Engagement Message
How is this different from the directing style we just learned?
Coaching combines high direction AND high support. You still provide clear guidance like in directing style, but now you add encouragement, explanation, and collaboration.
It's like being both a mentor and a motivator at the same time.
Engagement Message
Why might someone with some skills still need both direction and support?
High direction in coaching means: clear expectations, step-by-step guidance, and structured approach. But now you explain WHY behind your decisions.
Instead of "Complete this," you say "Complete this because..." This helps them understand your leadership reasoning.
Engagement Message
Rephrase "Finish the quarterly review by Friday." as a coaching statement that includes a brief "because…" reason.
High support means: listening to their concerns, asking for their input, providing encouragement, and acknowledging their progress.
You're creating a safe space for them to share doubts while still giving them the leadership they need.

What would make you feel supported while learning something challenging at work?
