Learn to read and describe distributions by center, spread, peaks, symmetry, and tails. Explore uniform, normal, binomial, and skewed distributions, understand the processes behind them, and classify real-world variables using visual and contextual clues.
You'll discover what a probability distribution really is: a picture of how likely every possible outcome is. Through simulations and graph-reading you'll learn to read a distribution graph, tell counted outcomes from measured ones, and describe any shape by where it's centered and how spread out it is — all visually, with no calculation required.
You'll deepen your feel for the shape of a distribution — counting its peaks, judging its symmetry, and following its tails. Then you'll meet your first named distribution: the flat uniform shape, where every outcome is equally likely, which becomes the simplest baseline against which every other shape is compared.
You'll build a lasting feel for the normal distribution — its symmetric bell shape, the way values cluster near the center and thin out toward the tails, and how its center and spread set its position and width. You'll also see why so many everyday quantities turn out approximately normal.
You'll explore the binomial distribution as the result of a fixed number of repeated yes/no trials, reading the likelihood of each possible number of successes. You'll predict how its shape shifts with the chance of success and the number of trials, and learn to spot binomial situations around you.
You'll learn to recognize skewed distributions and read their asymmetry with confidence, telling right skew from left skew by the direction of the long tail. You'll also reason about the real-world processes — like a floor near zero or a natural ceiling — that produce each kind of skew.
You'll pull the whole path together into one recognition skill, using diagnostic questions to narrow down a variable's likely distribution and telling apart commonly confused shapes. You'll predict and justify which distribution an unfamiliar variable most likely follows, using both visual and process evidence.
