Showing Excitement and Asking Good Questions

Welcome to another crucial unit in our course on acing recruiter screens. Following our discussions on adapting responses, this unit will help you master the art of showing genuine excitement and asking insightful questions—key components for impressing recruiters and demonstrating your enthusiasm for the role.

Enthusiasm can be a game-changer in your interviews. Your goal is to show more than just interest; you need to convey genuine excitement that resonates with the recruiter. This goes beyond simple statements. For example, rather than saying, "I'm excited about this role," a more effective approach would be: "I’m thrilled about this opportunity because I’ve been following your company's work in AI development, and I’m eager to contribute my machine learning expertise to your innovative projects." This specific reference not only shows your excitement but also your knowledge about the company.

Let's take a look at a hypothetical dialog between Chris and Natalie to see how demonstrating excitement can be effectively communicated.

• Natalie: What excites you about this role?
• Chris: I'm genuinely excited about this opportunity because I've been following your company's progress in AI development. The groundbreaking work you did on Project Phoenix particularly stands out. I believe my background in machine learning and AI can contribute significantly to your future projects.

In this dialog, Chris highlights a specific project (Project Phoenix) to show that he has researched the company and is genuinely interested in their work. This specific reference makes his excitement authentic and convincing.

Additionally, your tone, body language, and eye contact play significant roles. Maintain open, engaged body language and ensure your enthusiasm comes through in your voice, making your excitement feel authentic and infectious.

Asking insightful questions is another way to leave a lasting impression. This shows that you have a genuine interest in understanding the company better and are thinking critically about how you fit within it. Avoid basic or trivial questions, and opt for those that delve deeper into the company’s operation and culture.

Examples of insightful questions include: "Can you share more about the company's approach to innovation and how it impacts your team?" or "What are the current major challenges facing the team, and how can someone in this role contribute to overcoming them?" These types of questions demonstrate not only your interest but also your strategic thinking and commitment to making a meaningful impact.

Now it’s time to practice these skills through role-play. In upcoming sessions, you will demonstrate your excitement and engage recruiters with thoughtful questions. Remember to:

• Showcase genuine enthusiasm through specific references.
• Use open and engaging body language.
• Prepare questions that reveal a deeper understanding of the company’s dynamics and challenges.

With dedicated practice and constructive feedback in these role-play activities, you will refine your ability to stand out positively in interviews. Get ready to leave a memorable impression in your upcoming sessions!
