Intro to HTML Tables

Welcome to the next step in your journey to creating rich, navigable webpages with HTML. In this lesson we will dive into a very specific but highly useful element: HTML tables. This unit will take you through the basics of creating and formatting tables to display structured information effectively.

In this lesson, you will learn how to create tables in HTML. Tables are a powerful tool for organizing data in a grid format. For instance, imagine you are creating a webpage to list your favorite science fiction books. You can use a table to neatly display each book's title, author, and year of publication.

Here’s an example:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <title>My Booklist</title>
</head>
<body>
    <h1>My Sci-Fi Books</h1>
    <table border='1'>
        <thead>
            <tr>
                <th>Title</th>
                <th>Author</th>
                <th>Year</th>
            </tr>
        </thead>
        <tbody>
            <tr>
                <td>Neuromancer</td>
                <td>William Gibson</td>
                <td>1984</td>
            </tr>
            <tr>
                <td>Snow Crash</td>
                <td>Neal Stephenson</td>
                <td>1992</td>
            </tr>
            <tr>
                <td>Ready Player One</td>
                <td>Ernest Cline</td>
                <td>2011</td>
            </tr>
        </tbody>
    </table>
</body>
</html>

In this snippet, a table is created to list three sci-fi books. It uses various HTML tags, such as <table>, <thead>, <tbody>, <tr>, <th>, and <td>, each serving a specific purpose to structure the data logically.

Let's break down the key elements of this table:

• <table>: The main container for the table - everything inside this tag is part of the table.
• <thead>: The table header section containing the column headings.
• <tbody>: The table body section containing the data rows.
• <tr>: A table row containing cells.
• <th>: A table header cell used for column headings.
• <td>: A table data cell used for data entries. Note, that for well-structured tables, each <td> should correspond to a <th> in the same column - in other words the number of <td> elements in each row should match the number of <th> elements in the header row.

Let's now explore how these elements are used in the example above:

• The <table> tag creates the table structure with a border attribute set to 1 for a visible border.
  • The <thead> tag contains a single row <tr> with three header cells <th> for the columns: Title, Author, and Year.
  • The <tbody> tag contains three rows <tr>, each with three data cells <td> for the book information.
    • The first row lists the book Neuromancer by William Gibson, published in 1984.
    • The second row lists the book Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, published in 1992.
    • The third row lists the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, published in 2011.

This example demonstrates how tables can be used to present structured data in a clear and organized manner.
