Push Beyond Comfort Zones

In this unit, you will discover how to motivate your team members to push beyond their comfort zones. We will explore setting more aggressive timelines, aiming higher than team members think they can go, and encouraging people to take on new experiences. Once you master these skills, you will build a team that can soar to new heights.

Encouraging your team to set more aggressive timelines can boost their productivity and help them realize their potential. For instance, if a project usually takes three weeks, challenge the team to complete it in two and a half weeks by optimizing their processes. When presenting this challenge, use language like, "I know we usually allocate three weeks for this task, but I believe we can push ourselves to finish in two and a half. Let's find ways to streamline our process."

Let's see an example conversation:

• Natalie: Hey Jake, I think we need to advance our project timeline. Can we aim to complete this in two and a half weeks instead of three?
• Jake: That sounds challenging. What changes do you think we need to make to hit that deadline?
• Natalie: I think we can optimize the review process and automate some of the testing phases.
• Jake: Okay, that makes sense. Let's discuss it with the team and see what everyone thinks.

Pushing your team to set more ambitious goals can help them build confidence and enhance their skills. For example, if a team member is used to leading one project at a time, challenge them to manage two smaller projects simultaneously. Encourage them with phrases such as, "I think you're ready for a bigger challenge. How about managing these two projects concurrently? I'll be here to support you."

Encouraging team members to take on new tasks or responsibilities promotes learning and fosters innovation. For example, if a team member has never conducted user interviews, suggest they lead the next round.

• Chris: Nova, how do you feel about leading the user interviews for our next update?
• Nova: I've never done that before. It sounds intimidating.
• Chris: I understand, but it's a great opportunity to expand your skill set, and I'll support you through the process.
• Nova: Okay, I'm willing to give it a try.

By pushing your team to set aggressive timelines, aim higher, and take on new tasks, you will foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. Prepare yourself for the upcoming role-play sessions that will help you practice and refine these motivational strategies.
