String Searching Algorithms in JavaScript

Welcome to this insightful lesson. Today's focus will be on string searching algorithms, a fundamental part of programming often encountered in software development, the design of databases, and information retrieval. This lesson will walk you through the intricacies of these algorithms, explaining the principles behind each one.

For instance, consider the KMP string searching algorithm, whose essence is to eliminate the need to backtrack by retaining the information elicited from previous comparisons. If, at some point in the pattern, there is a mismatch, the algorithm does not begin matching the pattern with the text from the start but from a pre-computed point that takes into account all previous comparisons. It's an efficient way to avoid redoing work!

There are a lot of details regarding this algorithm, but here is what its implementation might look like:

function kmpSearch(text, pattern) {
    function computeLPS(pattern) {
        const lps = new Array(pattern.length).fill(0);
        let length = 0;
        let i = 1;
        while (i < pattern.length) {
            if (pattern[i] === pattern[length]) {
                length++;
                lps[i] = length;
                i++;
            } else {
                if (length !== 0) {
                    length = lps[length - 1];
                } else {
                    lps[i] = 0;
                    i++;
                }
            }
        }
        return lps;
    }

    const lps = computeLPS(pattern);
    let i = 0, j = 0;
    while (i < text.length) {
        if (pattern[j] === text[i]) {
            i++;
            j++;
        }
        if (j === pattern.length) {
            return i - j;
        } else if (i < text.length && pattern[j] !== text[i]) {
            if (j !== 0) {
                j = lps[j - 1];
            } else {
                i++;
            }
        }
    }
    return -1;
}

// Test
console.log(kmpSearch("abxabcabcaby", "abcaby"));  // Output: 6

Let's break down how the above implementation works:

1. computeLPS function: This helper function computes the Longest Prefix Suffix (LPS) array for the given pattern. The LPS array helps in deciding the next positions to check in case of a mismatch.

2. kmpSearch function: This function orchestrates the pattern search within the given text using the computed LPS array. It matches the text with the pattern and avoids unnecessary comparisons. Feel free to ask questions to clarify the details!
