Coach to Balance Creativity with Practical Execution

In this unit, you will discover how to guide your team members who exhibit high Openness to Experience by helping them balance their creativity with practical execution. This involves coaching on both commonly underused and overused behaviors for teammates with this personality style. Prepare to transform inspiring ideas into actionable plans, ensuring ideas reach implementation, and streamlining their focus to enhance productivity.

Inspiring ideas are invaluable assets, but highly creative team members at times struggle to translate those big ideas into actionable steps to accomplish tangible outcomes. Encourage your team members to dissect their creative concepts into manageable components. Begin by identifying key elements and outlining sequential tasks necessary for implementation.

This approach is illustrated in the following sample dialogue:

• Nova: The AI-driven platform could really streamline our process, don't you think?
• Jake: Absolutely! Let's break it down. How about starting with researching possible AI tools?
• Nova: That makes sense. We could also draft a list of features to focus on.
• Jake: Great! Then, coordinating with IT for deployment would be the next logical step.

In this dialogue, Jake effectively helps Nova convert an inspiring idea into a series of actionable steps by breaking it down into manageable tasks. By building this practice, your team can effectively transform abstract ideas into practical plans.

Team members with high openness often have difficulty driving projects through to completion due to becoming distracted by their attraction to new ideas.

The following coaching techniques can be effective:

• Set clear milestones for tracking progress to encourage them to commit to seeing projects through.
• Implement regular check-ins to reaffirm the value of completing tasks before embarking on new ones.

For instance, asking "How can we ensure this project is finalized before exploring new opportunities?" will help maintain focus and drive projects to completion.

While creativity can be boundless, teammates may unintentionally invest energy in too many directions leading to diluted efforts. Help your team members prioritize high-impact initiatives by establishing criteria such as return on time investment.

Encourage them with questions like "Let's assess which projects will make the highest impact while requiring the smallest time investment this quarter." This approach not only focuses their energy but also optimizes their efforts, ensuring time is spent on initiatives that yield the most significant results.

As we move to the upcoming role-play sessions, you'll have the chance to apply these concepts in guiding your team to integrate creativity with effective execution.
