Basic HTML Structure

In this lesson, we'll take our first exciting steps into the world of web development. Specifically, we’re going to explore the structure of a basic HTML document. HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, is the backbone of every webpage you see on the internet. Learning to create an HTML structure is the foundation for building your own web pages.

By the end of this lesson, you'll understand the fundamental structure of an HTML document. We'll cover the essential tags that form the skeleton of any webpage. Let's break down a simple HTML document:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <title>My First Webpage</title>
</head>
<body>
    Hello World
    <!-- This is a comment -->
</body>
</html>

Here's a quick overview of what each part does:

• <!DOCTYPE html>: This declaration defines the document type and version of HTML. Note that it's not an HTML tag but rather an instruction to the web browser that tells it which version of HTML the document is written in.
• <html lang="en">: This tag opens the HTML document and specifies the language.
• <head>: Inside the head tag, you'll find metadata such as the character set and the title of your page.
• <meta charset="UTF-8">: This tag sets the character encoding for your document, making sure it displays text correctly.
• <title>: The content inside this tag appears in the browser's title bar or tab.
• <body>: This is where all the visible content of your webpage goes. Anything you want to display on the page will be within these tags.

Besides breaking down the key parts of the code, let's also pay attention to the line <!-- This is a comment -->. Comments are a way to add notes to your code that won't be displayed on the webpage. They are useful for documenting your code or temporarily disabling parts of it. Comments are created by enclosing text between <!-- and -->.

HTML tags are the building blocks of a webpage. They are used to define the structure and content of the document. Tags are enclosed in angle brackets < > and come in pairs: an opening tag and a closing tag. The opening tag contains the name of the element, while the closing tag has a forward slash before the element name. For example, <body> is an opening tag, and </body> is a closing tag.

There are also self-closing tags that don't require a closing tag - those are tags that don't have any content inside them and close themselves. For example, the <meta> tag from the code above is self-closing and doesn't need a closing tag </meta>. You can also put a forward slash at the end of the tag to make it self-closing, like this: <meta />, but it's not required.

Understanding the basic structure of an HTML document is crucial because it lays the groundwork for everything else you will do in web development. The structure ensures that your webpage is recognized and rendered correctly by web browsers. Without a proper structure, even the most beautifully designed webpage will fail to display correctly or might not load at all.
