Discuss Development Progress

In this unit, we will explore effective strategies for discussing development progress with your team members. As their manager, your role is pivotal in ensuring they stay on track with their development goals and address any challenges. We'll delve into three key aspects: falling behind, over-focusing, and delivering balanced feedback.

It's essential to periodically check in to understand why a team member might be falling behind on their development goals. Begin by asking open-ended questions to uncover the root causes. For example, you could ask, "Can you share what obstacles you've encountered in working on your development goals?" This encourages honest conversation and helps you understand their challenges without making them feel blamed.

• Jake: Chris, I’ve noticed you've been struggling to keep up with your development goals. Can you share what obstacles you've encountered?
• Chris: I've been swamped with daily tasks and find it hard to allocate time for my development.
• Jake: That’s understandable. Let’s identify some of these tasks and see if we can reprioritize or delegate them to free up your time for development.

Once the reasons are clear, collaborate on actionable steps to get them back on track. This might involve reprioritizing tasks or providing additional resources to help them succeed.

While personal growth is vital, over-focusing on development can lead people neglecting their core responsibilities. If you notice this happening, have a candid conversation emphasizing the importance of balance. You might say, "Your dedication to personal development is impressive, but it's also crucial to balance this with our project goals."

Use specific examples to clarify your point, such as: "Improving your coding skills is fantastic, but we also need to ensure project deadlines are met." This helps the team member understand the need for a balanced approach.

Providing feedback that strikes the right balance between positive reinforcement and constructive criticism encourages continuous improvement. When discussing development progress, use the sandwich approach: start with positive feedback, address areas for improvement, and end on a positive note.

For instance, you might say, "I appreciate your dedication to learning new technologies. However, I've noticed some project delays. Let's discuss how we can manage time better to balance both."

• Nova: Jake, your learning initiatives are really commendable. However, I’ve noticed there have been delays in the project timelines.
• Jake: I’ve been focusing heavily on upskilling, maybe I need better time management.
• Nova: That makes sense. Let’s create a balanced schedule that allows you to continue learning while meeting our project milestones.

By mastering these strategies, you'll be better equipped to guide your team through their development journeys. In the next part of this unit, we will practice these concepts through role-play sessions to build your confidence in applying them in real-life scenarios. Stay tuned!
