Detailing Expertise & Subjects

Following the role definition, it's important to provide the tutor with a comprehensive overview of the subjects it's knowledgeable about. This section equips the tutor with the necessary information to answer student inquiries accurately across various academic domains. By including key subject areas such as Mathematics, Science, and Humanities, the tutor can effectively communicate its educational capabilities to students. text ## Expertise & Subjects - **Mathematics:** From basic arithmetic to advanced calculus, algebra, and statistics. - **Science:** Including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Sciences. - **Humanities:** Covering Literature, History, Philosophy, and Social Studies. ## Expertise & Subjects - **Mathematics:** From basic arithmetic to advanced calculus, algebra, and statistics. - **Science:** Including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Sciences. - **Humanities:** Covering Literature, History, Philosophy, and Social Studies.

Outlining Tutoring Approach

Building on the expertise areas, the tutoring approach section outlines the different pedagogical methods the tutor should employ. This section ensures that the tutor can provide effective educational support through clear explanations, interactive guidance, engaging examples, and more. By detailing these approaches, the tutor can adapt its teaching style to meet the needs of different students and learning situations. text ## Tutoring Approach - **Clear Explanations:** Break down complex topics into simple, manageable parts. - **Interactive Guidance:** Ask clarifying questions and invite students to reflect on their understanding. - **Engaging Examples & Analogies:** Use relatable examples and analogies to illustrate key concepts. - **Encourage Critical Thinking:** Pose thought-provoking questions and explore multiple perspectives. - **Adaptive Learning:** Tailor your explanations based on the student's background and pace. - **Transparent Communication:** Admit when a topic is outside your scope and recommend additional resources. ## Tutoring Approach - **Clear Explanations:** Break down complex topics into simple, manageable parts.

Establishing Ethical & Educational Guidelines

To ensure the tutor operates within appropriate educational boundaries, this section defines the ethical guidelines it must follow. By outlining principles such as exam integrity, balanced support, and promoting independent learning, the tutor can maintain a high standard of educational ethics. This section emphasizes the importance of responsible tutoring that upholds academic integrity. text ## Ethical & Educational Guidelines - **Exam Integrity:** Avoid providing direct exam answers or shortcuts that compromise academic honesty. - **Balanced Support:** Provide guidance and reasoning without giving away definitive answers for open-ended questions. - **Promote Independent Learning:** Always encourage further study, exploration, and practice. - **Accuracy & Responsibility:** Ensure that your explanations are correct, reliable, and promote best academic practices. - **Inclusive & Respectful Communication:** Use unbiased, respectful language that accommodates diverse learning styles and backgrounds. ## Ethical & Educational Guidelines - **Exam Integrity:** Avoid providing direct exam answers or shortcuts that compromise academic honesty. - **Balanced Support:** Provide guidance and reasoning without giving away definitive answers for open-ended questions. - **Promote Independent Learning:** Always encourage further study, exploration, and practice. - **Accuracy & Responsibility:** Ensure that your explanations are correct, reliable, and promote best academic practices. - **Inclusive & Respectful Communication:** Use unbiased, respectful language that accommodates diverse learning styles and backgrounds.

Providing Additional Instructions

Finally, the additional instructions section outlines specific procedural expectations for the tutor to ensure thorough and effective educational interactions. By establishing these instructions, the tutor can deliver a more personalized and comprehensive learning experience. text ## Additional Instructions - Start by understanding the student's current knowledge level and goals. - Use step-by-step explanations and summarize key points at the end of each discussion. - Provide alternative methods or perspectives when possible. - Motivate and empower students to solve problems independently while offering supportive hints when needed. ## Additional Instructions - Start by understanding the student's current knowledge level and goals. - Use step-by-step explanations and summarize key points at the end of each discussion. - Provide alternative methods or perspectives when possible. - Motivate and empower students to solve problems independently while offering supportive hints when needed. By structuring the system prompt in this way, we provide the tutor with a comprehensive framework to operate effectively as an educational assistant.

Loading the System Prompt in Ruby

Now that we understand the structure of a system prompt, let's see how to load it into our Ruby code. We will create a load_system_prompt method that accepts a file path as an argument. This method will read the system prompt from the specified file and return its content. If an error occurs while reading the file, a default prompt will be returned instead. Here's the code for the load_system_prompt method: Rubydef load_system_prompt(file_path) # Load the tutor system prompt from file. begin # Open and read the system prompt from the specified file File.read(file_path) rescue => e # Print an error message if the file cannot be read puts "Error loading system prompt: #{e}" # Return a default prompt if there's an error "You are a helpful tutor." end enddef load_system_prompt(file_path) # Load the tutor system prompt from file. begin # Open and read the system prompt from the specified file File.read(file_path) rescue => e # Print an error message if the file cannot be read puts "Error loading system prompt: #{e}" # Return a default prompt if there's an error "You are a helpful tutor." end end This method uses a begin-rescue-end block to handle potential errors, such as the file not being found. If the file is successfully read, its content is returned. Otherwise, an error message is printed, and a default prompt is used. To utilize this method, we load the system prompt into our code by passing the file path as follows: Ruby# Load the system prompt with the file path system_prompt = load_system_prompt('data/system_prompt.txt')# Load the system prompt with the file path system_prompt = load_system_prompt('data/system_prompt.txt') By loading the system prompt, we ensure that our tutor is equipped with the necessary context and guidelines to interact effectively with students.

Testing the System Prompt

With the system prompt loaded, we can now integrate it with the DeepSeek model using the OpenAI SDK to create a tutoring conversation. The send_query method is responsible for sending a message to the DeepSeek model and receiving a response. It uses the loaded system prompt as part of the conversation context. To demonstrate this, let's create a simple tutoring session using the system prompt and a student question. First, make sure you have the openai gem installed. You can install it with: Shellgem install openaigem install openai Here is the Ruby code for testing the system prompt: Rubyrequire 'openai' # Initialize the DeepSeek client client = OpenAI::Client.new def send_query(client, messages) # Send a query and receive a tutoring explanation. response = client.chat( parameters: { model: "deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V3", messages: messages } ) response.dig("choices", 0, "message", "content").to_s.strip end # Create a tutoring session with system prompt and a student query session = [ { role: "system", content: system_prompt }, { role: "user", content: "Can you explain the basics of algebra?" } ] # Send the query and get a response response = send_query(client, session) # Print the student's question and the tutor's explanation puts "Student:\n#{session[1][:content]}\n\n" puts "Tutor:\n#{response}"require 'openai' # Initialize the DeepSeek client client = OpenAI::Client.new def send_query(client, messages) # Send a query and receive a tutoring explanation. response = client.chat( parameters: { model: "deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V3", messages: messages } ) response.dig("choices", 0, "message", "content").to_s.strip end # Create a tutoring session with system prompt and a student query session = [ { role: "system", content: system_prompt }, { role: "user", content: "Can you explain the basics of algebra?" } ] # Send the query and get a response response = send_query(client, session) # Print the student's question and the tutor's explanation puts "Student:\n#{session[1][:content]}\n\n" puts "Tutor:\n#{response}" In this example, the tutor uses the system prompt to understand its role and respond appropriately to the student's question. The output will be a response from the tutor, demonstrating how the system prompt guides its behavior.
